First, does the pedal feel squishy underfoot? If so, it may be time to head to the shop. Brake pedals should feel firm under pressure, so if they're feeling soft instead, you could have a major problem.

Second, keep an ear out for odd noises. If you're hearing loud, metal on metal grinding sounds, it could be an indicator that something is amiss. In fact, more times than not, this type of sound can mean that your rotors are coming in to contact with your calipers. In other words, your brakes are severely worn. Get to the shop, as soon as you can.

Lastly, keep an eye out for other odd occurrences upon braking. If you notice shaking, rumbling, or even pulling to the right or left, call your mechanic. All of these symptoms are indicators of issues with your brakes, so don't delay. Reach out for help!
